We have been reconciled to God by Jesus. God is not at war with us because of our sin nature any longer. Jesus has taken away that sin nature and so God is not mad at us any more; He's not even in a bad mood! As the angels announced, between God and us there is 'peace on earth and goodwill towards men'. We have been reconciled to God; the war is over!

Colossians 1:21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

When we accept Jesus as our propitiation for sin, He presents us to our heavenly Father 'holy and blameless'. Now we can approach God at any time as dear children; sons and daughters. With our consciences cleansed there is now no guilt to hold us back from enjoying a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Our new relationship with God is not because of our obedience, but because of our faith in Jesus and the fact that we are exhibiting the faith of Jesus.

Galatians 3:11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.”

No one who has thought of keeping the law (besides Jesus) has ever kept that criteria in order to gain eternal life, but under the new covenant the criteria is 'faith/belief in Jesus', which criteria Jesus' followers do keep and we stand before God 'holy and blameless', righteous in Jesus the Christ!
