Paul, in writing to the Corinthians about the value of having right motives tells them that self-sacrifice and even martyrdom will gain you no kudos if they are entered into with self-serving as the attitude.

1 Corinthians 13:3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

We can throw our good deeds in the face of others in order to boast, or buy their allegiance or make them indebted to us through guilt and the net result is that therein only is any reward we will have. As far as God is concerned our actions were worthless.

We see the correct attitude, as you would expect, in the life of Jesus. Speaking of Jesus' attitude as He approached the cross and His passion and sacrifice on our behalf, the writer of the fourth gospel says this...

John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end

Jesus faced torture, beatings and death for us with the sole motivation of Love for others.
