God gives us various gifts and it's good to ask for them to use for His kingdom, to project the gospel and honour God, but we must always remember that their operation is to glorify God and they are to be used from a heart filled with love.

God's love is to be shed abroad from our hearts and His gifts operate effectually only when our motive is one of love.

If we think of the greatest man that ever lived, Jesus the Messiah, we see the perfect example and lesson in using the gifts of the Holy Spirit in love. Jesus loved us so much that for the Joy set before Him He went to the cross.

1 Corinthians 13:2 If I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

It is not a case of gifts OR love. I hope no-one would think that we can live godly lives without faith in God or knowledge of God! No! Without faith it's impossible to please God and we must seek all of God's gifts which are relevant to our calling. But, with all our seeking, know and operate in God's love.
