The apostle John summed up what Love is like in his first letter, especially in Chapters 4 and 5. What he tells us is that when we draw close to God His character rubs off on us! When you know God and are known by Him you are filled with His love and you can love in return. You don't just love God you love all people as well.

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

This seems too simple to some. They want to have more to do with it themselves. Surely they have to work up the feeling inside them with much effort and soul searching? But just as we cannot keep law perfectly by our efforts we cannot love perfectly by our efforts either!

1 John 3:9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.

Walking according to God's standard can only be done by grace after being born of God and loving as God loves is also by grace through faith in the Son that God sent to die for us.

Now if we could just get our egos out of the way and let Jesus do it all through us!
