Jesus tells us in John's gospel in John 14 verse 21 that the person who loves Him is the person who will keep His commandments. Love for Jesus comes first; then you're enabled to do His will. We love God because He loved us first. Love for us starts when we "See" God's love for us and begin to love Him in return.

John 14:21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

Now with the love of God being poured out into our hearts we can keep Jesus' commandments and we will be excited to do the necessary exercise of going through the book of John to see what are His commands.

We are to put faith in Jesus; we are to love one another and we are to 'pour out our lives for one another', just as Jesus did.

John 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus said this just after He had washed His disciples feet showing that all of us should have an attitude of service towards each other. Once again Love is shown to be doing those acts of service/help/healing which will manifest the characteristics of Jesus.
